Oregano, A Natural Remedy

Herbs are known for many uses. First, of course, it helps give colors and flavors to your recipes, but it is not only a perfect ingredient to your kitchen, but it is also a healing agent that provides numerous benefits to your health.

I grew up in a culture where natural medicine is essential to cure minor illnesses. Instead of taking a lot of tablets and capsules, my parents also tried to give me natural herbs as an alternative. Since our family was just an average earner, a natural remedy is another option than being hospitalized, unless it is getting serious. So for them, there is no harm in trying to do it in another way.

One of my mom’s excellent healing agents is Oregano, a plant with a lot to offer. The fantastic thing about Oregano is that it can be an outdoor or indoor plant as long as it receives sunlight and water. Whenever we caught cough and colds, my mother extracted a spoon full of Oregano and took it before we went to bed. Now that I am already a mother, I can say that this practice is an efficient and effective alternative medicine. Unfortunately, my daughter Calie, got a cough and cold last August 2021, which I got apprehensive about. Still, this situation also made me realize that parents are our real-life heroes, particularly protecting us. Since we find it difficult to visit a clinic due to pandemics, aside from the prescribed medicine of our doctor in the family, my husband and I tried some natural remedies.

We gave Calie the prescribed medicine three times a day. In the evening, we also practiced the neti pot, which is an effective way to rinse the mucus from her system. Then, we gave Calie oregano extract after the medicine. Fresh oregano medicine is straightforward to do, and I will be sharing with you the easy steps:

  1. Get Oregano leaves. Please make sure they are clean.
  2. Put the leaves in a hot pan or container and cover it for 2-5 minutes.
  3. Check the leaves from time to time. If the leaves turn into dark green color, you can transfer them on a clean small plate.
  4. Get a spoon, make sure it is clean, then get the Oregano leaves and squeeze it until you get the brownish juices out.
  5. You can also add a pinch of sugar to give a little sweetness to the flavor, but this is optional.
  6. Then drink it.

Aside from being an exceptional healing agent, Oregano can be a spice to your recipes. It especially gives a rich flavor to your food. Oregano leaves can also be a mosquito repellant. I just mentioned some of the benefits I experienced on using Oregano, but I believe there are numerous ways to help us in our lifestyle.
